Assignment 3 Listen to these examples of Cuban rumbas. They are sung in Spanish and melodically are reminiscent of Spanish music. Compare these examples to the ones from Africa in Day One. Also: Compare the previous two examples to these examples of flamenco music from Spain. Do you hear any similarities? These are examples of the Cuban danzón. Can you hear the African rhythmic elements co-existing with European harmonies and melodies? Listen to the great Celia Cruz in some of these Salsa excerpts. This is the quintessential dance of the Latino community in the US. Can you hear the combination of African roots together with Spanish and jazz elements in it? Can you name the instruments in these examples? Can you hear the African-influenced percussion instruments? Can you hear the European instruments in them as well?
