Assignment 2: Awilda Villarini

Awilda Villarini has attracted international attention for her unique synthesis of Hispanic and European musical traditions. A native of Puerto Rico, she was educated at the Juilliard School of Music and New York University, the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore and the Hochschule fur Musik in Vienna. During her career, Villarini has created work for piano, chamber music, theatre, and orchestra. Her musical style is eclectic and her works are considered talented and innovative. At present, she is considered one of the most gifted younger composers working on the international scene.

To familiarize yourself with Awilda Villarini, listen to the following compositions:
“Suite for Trombones” (1992) or “La Leyenda del Indio” (1992)

Discuss instrumentation Villarini uses in these compositions and the Afro-Caribbean elements of her music.
