The African Roots of Latin Music/ Module 3: Salsa and Latin Jazz

Assignment 2: Cubop and Beyond

The culmination of the influence of Cuban music on American jazz occurred with Dizzy Gillespie’s historic concert in September of 1947 which included the “Afro-Cuban Drums Suite,” which marks the beginning of the brief but fruitful collaboration between Gillespie and the Cuban drummer Chano Pozo. Other key musicians from this period include the Palmieri brothers, Charlie and Eddie, Tito Puente, and others.
