HUS 204 LATIN AMERICAN CIVILIZATIONS

AMERICAN MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY REPORT

PURPOSE: To acquaint students with the major styles, periods and features in the art, architecture and ceramics of pre-Columbian America.

QUESTIONS

1. List the major periods in Maya art represented in this exhibit.

2. Compare and contrast the features in Classic Maya art Maya?Toltec art.

3. Describe the reproduction of the ball court from Chichen Itza. Describe the stone belts used by the players.

4. Describe the San Lorenzo head (dimensions, material, features, possible purpose)

5. Describe the facsimile of the Codex Nuttall (Mixtec) on the left side of the hall.

6. Compare and contrast Chavin, Mochica and Nasca ceramics.

7. Describe the Paracas mantle (Materials, techniques used, colors, scene depicted)

8. Describe the Paracas mummy and discuss the mummifying procedure, as well as the practice od cranial deformation exhibited by the mummy.

Location:
The American Museum of Natural History is located at Central Park West and 79th Street in New York City.


Hours of Operation:
The Museum is open daily, 10:00 a.m.-5:45 p.m.
The Rose Center remains open on Fridays until 8:45 p.m.
The Museum is closed Thanksgiving and Christmas.


Space Show Hours:
Every half hour Sunday-Thursday and Saturday, 10:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.; Friday, 10:30 a.m.-7:30 p.m.

Except where noted, photography for personal use is allowed with hand-held cameras and with available light or electronic flash attachments. Tripods and lights may not be used. Reproduction or sale of photographs is not allowed without Museum permission. No flash photography is permitted in the Space Theater or in the IMAX Theater.

Admissions
$10.00 recommended for adults, $5.00 recommended for students and senior citizens, includes Main Building and The Cloisters on the same day; free to Members and children under twelve with an adult. To help cover the cost of special exhibitions, for which there is no additional charge or special ticketing, we ask that you please pay the full suggested amount.

Choose five (5) objects from the pre-Columbian and African art exhibits and include the following information about each piece:

a) Place of origin

b) Date

c) Materials used, size

d) Description of object

e) Function (Who used it? What was it used for?)

The report should be neatly typed and placed in a folder.
Photographs or postcards are desirable; drawings can be used instead.
