Introduction/Smoking -- Maria Ochoa

Some people have health habits that are good for them and others for reason that are bad for them. For example: yoga is healthy for a good life and smoking and drinking is dangerous for life.

I have five members in my group Sabbir, Mariuz, Joaquin, Khan and Jessica. We decided to talk about health, we have four choices the first is about smoking, the second about don't drinking and driving, the third is Peer pressure and its effects, fourth is H.I.V. and finally is yoga.

Let me begin with smoking, I have a bad experience about smoking. My father use to smoke, One day we had to take him to the hospital, the doctor said he had cancer he was in a wheelchair for long time he had a disease because he smoked a lot.  My father died because his lungs got closed.

It is difficult for me to talk about what happened to my father but I want to give a message, especially for young people. Stop smoking because it is dangerous for you. I hate cigarettes because they took the most important person in my life my father.

Alcohol -- MD A Khan

Hello Everybody. This is WHUL 100 LaGuardia and it’s Md. A. Khan. Today I’m here for the inspiration of new life. Therefore my group’s name is NEW LIFE. By the way, I’m here to talk about alcohol. It’s not only about the alcohol. Let’s better say drinking and driving or driving under the influence of alcohol.

As everybody knows, alcohol is a powerful drug. Every year tens of thousand of people die in motor vehicle crashed and as a matter of fact, alcohol is a factor in at least 50% of those crashed. It’s a universal truth that alcoholic drinks do harm to people of all ages, but especially to the underage people and young people. Alcohol affects the body’s control center, the brain. It weakens the very skill that drivers need to be safe.

I have a personal experience that happened last summer in the middle of June. I used to work 2-10 p.m. and one day after I finished my work, I met 3 of my friends. Then we decided to drink alcoholic drinks in order to have fun. So, we bought beer and started drinking until we got drunk. At 3:00 a.m. I wanted to come back home. One of my friends had a car and he said, “Okay, why don’t we just drop you off.” And I said that that would be great. Though we were all drunk, we four were riding in that car. Fortunately we did not have any problem until they dropped me off. At last I came home safely, but they had trouble. When my friends were trying to go back to their home, they were caught by the cops and got a ticket because the back light of that car was off and nobody noticed it.

Now I sometimes think that it could have been a worse thing that happened to us. And thus, there comes a question in my mind that is whether the law minimum age of buying alcoholic drinks is 21?

Peer Pressure -- Jessica Chacha

Good morning everybody! My name is Jessica. I’m going to talk about peer pressure and the relationship this has with alcohol, drugs and smoking. But what is peer pressure? Peer pressure is caring about what other people think about you and that can affect you in a positive or negative way in the way that you feel, act, dress or behave. Some people give the reason to try drugs or alcohol is that they feel curious or feel that everyone else is trying them. Some people think that taking drugs will make it easier to talk with another people, but in fact it can cause or create more problems. So why take the chance. This is a good question. Saying no to drugs is not an easy resolution an especially for young people and when you are involved in groups with people that have these habits. But we have some advice that can help you with peer pressure. If the peer pressure seems incredible, you can avoid the peer pressure by just walking away.

As you know the parents have an important part to play in this problem, so the US Department of Health Services recommends that the parents establish a firm and clear position in their homes about drugs and alcohol. And if kids already have this problem, the parents should know that they could find help. You can contact your local or state drug abuse authority for information on local resources. Don’t forget there is always somebody that can help.

HIV -- Joaquin Santana

HIV is a transmitted disease that causes AIDS. There are ways to get HIV. However, there are two common ways to get HIV, which are having sex without condom and sharing needle. A lot people may ask what alcohol and drugs have to do with HIV, well people it has to do a lot because when you are high or drunk you may say yes to sex when you mean no because drugs and alcohol change the way you feel. In 1980 doctor fund out about HIV and since the virus had increased rapidly, HIV had increase all round the world. People can live with HIV without noticing because even though you have HIV you can live longer periods such as 10 years. My advice to you people is be careful with HIV because it doesn't have cure. I hove you to take my advice as a any decision you may make in the future.
