I am going to talk about immigration laws in the United States and how deportation separates and affects families.
In 1985, my husband came to the United States illegally. He paid a Coyote to help him enter the United States. He was caught in Texas by the boarder patrol. Immigration said that his family had to pay $5,000.00 in order to let him, so his brother paid the fine. My husband thought that the problem was resolved.
We got married in 1990 and in 1991 I sponsored him. We got a response from immigration in 1994 to show up for an interview. When we got there, immigration told us that they misplaced his papers and had to mail us another appointment. After this appointment, we received tow more in 1996 and 1998 but nothing was resolved. In 1999 we received another appointment to be interviewed and the same thing happened, so my husband got upset and asked the immigration officers why they kept giving him appointments if they were not prepared, so immigration sent him to the third floor of the same building to apply for his work permit and also for his social security card. He said that finally at least something was resolved. The work permit was issued for a year. His work permit expired. We had plans to move to another state. I told my husband to remember to reapply for another one. We sent the application with $100.00 money order and he got approved. He received an appointment letter to show up in February 2000 to retake his picture. When we were standing in line, two officers approached him and told me that my husband was going to be deported. I was in shock. I couldn’t believe what was happening and I asked “Why?” They told me that because he entered the country illegally.
My husband promised our daughter that he was going to pick her up from school.
The worst part of this was when I had to pick my daughter up from school, the first thing she asked me way where her father was. I couldn’t talk. I suffered a lot seeing her suffer because of her father.
Immigration laws state that if a person is illegal, then they have to be deported whether or not they have children. That is the law. I wish immigration would change these laws and let people continue with the process here. When the families are separated, it causes many problems and pain, especially when there are kids involved.
