My Experience When I Came
to New York
I have been here for three years and I went to different places.
In each place I learned different things, but I never understood
when people talked to me. I’m going to tell about two experiences
that I had at that time. I will never forget it because my accent
was terrible and people always looked at me.
One of these places was in high school. When
I was in my English class I never understood my teacher. That
time was terrible because I felt bad. Everyone told to each other
and explained everything in that class. Also, we discussed a lot
of topics and I said nothing. When it was my turn to answer or
explain something about that class, I wanted to die. My face was
red. I didn’t know what I had to say. That time was terrible.
I felt like the most stupid girl in that class because I knew
all the answers but in my native language. I got depressed when
I was in conversation class because I came here to learn English
and I spoke with everybody. Unfortunately, I didn’t have
any English to say.
The second place was in my interview for a
job. When I started to talk the lady always said, “Ah. You
are the Spanish one! OK! We can start the interview but after
that I forgot all about my job experience. I answered her that
I didn’t have any. I said that because I thought it was
an easier way not to speak English. For that reason, I didn’t
get the job and she said that she was sorry for me because I didn’t
have any experience to work with them and I didn’t speak
enough English to help people. However, I could apply in one year
for a second interview.
In conclusion, my accent was a difficult
thing that I had in my first time that I came here. For that reason,
I started to learn English to improve my conversation and I will
get a good job in the future. I understand I need to speak English
like a native language speaker. I don’t want to have these
experiences a second time
