My Story When
I Came to New York
My name is Francisca Gomez. I'm 24 years old, and I have been
living here for 4 years. When I came to New York I used to have
a hard time because I didn't know English. I felt that I couldn't
survive without English. I was living with my family at this time,
but nobody knew English except my stepfather. It was really hard
for me. I felt stuck at home. I was eating, watching TV and sleeping
all day. One month later, I decided to change my feeling. I went
to Manhattan with one of my cousins, and I began to look for a
job, but I didn't know English. I went to an Odd Jobs store. My
cousin filled out the application for me, and the manager asked
if I spoke English. I said,
"No." Then he said that he needed
a bilingual person. I was persistent. I asked one of my mother's
friends whose name is Ana if she knew where I could find and English
school. She said, "Oh. Yes, I know where you can go to study
English and you don't have to pay. I will give you the address
and the telephone number." The next day I went to that school.
It was four blocks from my house. I began to study the following
day.
I was very happy. I felt that I began to obtain
my goals. I met a friend who was a very nice person and she asked
me if I would like to work in a supermarket. I said, "Sure.
Why not? But I don't know English so I don't know if they will
accept me. I will go." Then I got the job. I was working
and going to school. I learned a lot of English at that school.
Then I decided to go to college.
Now I feel more comfortable and more confident.
I learned that when we want to obtain our goals, we have to be
persistent.
