Study Experiences in New York

Since 2000, I have studied in New York City. Until 2003, I had studied in the academic ESL programs to learn how to write an American academic essay. For almost two years, I struggled with English writing organization. And I also learned the process of explaining abstract ideas logically. It was a very difficult process for me because most of my ideas were abstract. For a long time, I couldn't realize how to explain the ideas logically. In the class, each time I wrote the essay, the teacher told me that it was too abstract and needed to be more logical. Each time I understood that my essay was too abstract and that I needed to write more logically, but I couldn't understand what the logic was. After my long-term confusion about logic, finally I found that I needed to write the essay as a mathematical proof. Since I found this idea, I could easily overcome the struggle I had. As a mathematical proof, I needed to have only one main idea in the essay. Then I had to prove the idea. Before, I wrote many ideas in one essay and I confused the readers.

Now I would like to talk about the American educational system. Since the fall session of 2003, I have been studying at LaGuardia Community College. Honestly, I am surprised about the American educational system in New York. Basically, everyone can participate in this educational institution including the elderly and the foreign people. In other words, it is universal. I am also surprised that the American education is based on the individual person but not based on the national profit. In the college, every faculty member is open-minded toward different cultures and people. Each person is independent and mature. I have not only enjoyed the college life but also admired each department such as the childcare center and the counseling center.

I believe that education is for all people. And I also believe that education should be based on people's creativity and not on national organization or religion. I like the City University of New York because it is one of my ideal educational institutions.
