                Paper # 1: Defining Your Community: (5 points) – Due Class # 3

                Conduct a walking tour of the community in which you live.  In one paragraph, describe your neighborhood.  Make believe that you are writing this description for someone who has never visited the area.  Use descriptions of significant structures, activities, events, locations or other items that make up your neighborhood’s environment as a way of allowing the reader to understand where you live

                Paper # 2: Policy Making in Your Community (10 Points) – Due Class # 9

                Make a list of the following as they pertain to the neighborhood in which you live (for each person list their district designation and their office address):

                New York State Senator 
                Borough President
                New York State Assemblymember
                Community Board Chairperson
                New York City Councilperson

                Paper # 3: The Community Profile (15 Points) – Due Class 21 Develop a community profile of your neighborhood.

                Provide the boundaries of the neighborhood that you are working on.  Provide a street map of the neighborhood.

                On the street map, make a mark (and note the number for, where appropriate) the Community Board office, police precinct, fire station(s), post office(s), schools, religious institutions, hospitals, libraries, subway and/or railroad stations, community development corporation and human service agency(ies) you researched.

                Provide a copy of the latest Community District Needs report from the Community Board.

                Obtain or create a zoning map.  Color code land use in the following way:

                Yellow – Residential Districts
                Red – Commercial Districts
                Purple – Manufacturing District

                Required Field Work

                Attend one meeting of your neighborhood’s Community Board.  Submit the agenda and any attachments with your community profile.
