Caveat Emptor Please note: SCB203 is an intense course. It requires students to master a large amount of information and number of concepts. Dr. Gottlieb suggests that you study a minimum of 7 hrs per week to obtain a grade of C or better in lab.An additional 7 hrs should be devoted to mastering the lecture material. |
| Course Information SCB203 is the course code for Fundamentals of Human Biology I also commonly known as Human Anatomy & Physiology 1. The course is composed of lectures and laboratory exercises. The lectures count for 60% of the final grade; the laboratories count for 40% of the final grade. |
Science Study Hall The Science Study Hall , which is located in room M238, contains specimens, models, and slides that are used in the laboratory sessions. In addition, CD-ROMs and videos are available. Tutors are also available. M238 is usually open 6 days per week (not Sundays) and late on 1 or more evenings. Laboratory Information

Lecture Information To view the SCB203 lecture syllabus, click here. There are 36 lectures, 3 per week. Lectures are each 1 hour in duration. Attendance is mandatory. You are responsible for knowing the contents of each lecture. The lecture textbook is Funadmentals of Anatomy & Physiolgoy by Frederick H. Martini. Prentice Hall Publishers, 6th edition (2004). The textbook can be purchased in the College bookstore. The page numbers in the syllabus refer to Martinit's text, unless specified otherwise. Students can take advantage of the textbook website: www.aw.com/martini. |
Examinations & Grading Lecture. There will be 6 lecture quizzes, a midterm, and a final examation. The midterm covers all lecture material from the first lecture up to the midterm. The final covers all of he material from the midterm to the end of the semester. Each quiz is worth 5% of the final grade (30% total). The midterm and final are each worth 15% of the final grade (30% total). Any make-up tests will be given at the discretion of the instructor. Laboratory. There will be 4 laboratory examinations. These are not cumulative :Laboratory examination #1 will test the students' understanding of the firsrt 3 laboratory sessions. The 2nd laboratory examination will test the students understanding of bones (laboratories 4 & 5). The 3rd laboratory examination will test the students' mastery of muscle (laboratories 5-8). The 4th laboratory examination will test the students' knowledge of laboratory exercises 9-12. Each laboratory examination is worth 10% of your final grade (40% total). |
