Course Description

The purpose of this course is to improve your proficiency in English with an emphasis on writing.  Each week you will read and discuss a chapter from  Artsguide: World and Web, Girl with a Pearl Earring or thematically related short stories and articles.  Writing assignments summaries, response papers, and compositions will be based on these readings.

You will be writing one in-class composition each week, which I will return to you with my comments the following class period.  These compositions should be revised during the computer lab period and submitted to me the following class.  Please use 8   x 11 looseleaf paper for all writing assignments.

There is also a grammar component to this course.  Among the grammatical structures to be covered are the basic verb tenses, reported speech, sentence structure (and correcting fragments and run-ons), adjective and adverbial clauses, verbs followed by gerunds and infinitives, and comparative and superlative, and the conditional.

 Please note:

Late homework assignments are generally not accepted.  If you are absent, you are responsible for any work that you missed.   Exchange phone numbers with one or two of your classmates so that if you have to miss a class, you will be able to find out what was covered that day and what the homework assignment was.

You are permitted to be absent 11 hours of class (each class is two hours) and three hours of lab.  If you are more than ten minutes late to class, your lateness counts as 1/3 of an absence.
