Human Services Worker

ETHICS FOR HUMAN SERVICES WORKERS

1. Clients' needs come first.

2. Agency comes before self, within limitations.

3. In an emergency, pitch in.

4. Give credit where credit is due. Don't borrow others' ideas without giving
credit, and don't take credit for another person's work.

5. Back up other workers if they need help. Be supportive of colleagues.

6. Manage information according to the principles of confidentiality (see
separate concept check). In case of possible danger, inform those en-
dangered.

7. No discrimination based on race, ethnicity, gender, religion, sexual orienta-tion, disability, age or other personal characteristics.

8. Don't take advantage of clients. No sex with clients. No taking money from
clients. Don't accept valuable gifts from clients. Don't use clients' informa-
tion for your own advantage.

9. Promote independence in clients. Do not unnecessarily create dependence.

10. Seek feedback from people who can help you develop your skills. Be the
best worker you can be.

11. Educate yourself, and continue your education throughout your life.

12. Never tell an untruth. Tell the truth at the appropriate time, diplomatically.

(Note: These ethics are in addition to the usual workplace ethics, which include being reliable, being honest, etc.)
