DAY ONE A new Human Services worker struggles up the stairs to the third floor, where the Hunterspoint office of Citiwide Charities is located. Joan Foster, the director, is waiting for her. Joan shows her around, describing other staff members, showing her the office where she will work, and giving her the first client she will be responsible for. HSW (we know her by her initials) looks over the intake form, and runs into Betsy. Betsy is friendly, but a little strange. Frank, another colleague, comes in and asks if she would like to go to dinner in a private place. HSW turns him down. Her first client, Ms. Gustan, comes in. Ms. Gustan has been commanded by her husband to take on a new role, which she doesn't look forward to. HSW has some difficulty in understanding the situation in which Ms. Gustan finds herself. After Ms. Gustan leaves, Wilma, another colleague appears. Wilma, in response to HSW's question, explains why forms are important, and why organizations, in spite of their limitations, are useful in helping people. HSW's first day ends as Wilma offers to meet with her from time to time to help her understand what is going on at the office. |
