DAY SEVEN HSW begins the day by talking with Mary Grace at the Main Office of Citiwide Charities about Frank's behavior. Mary Grace plans to set up a meeting between herself, Frank, and HSW as soon as possible. After the meeting, HSW returns to the local office, runs into Wilma. Wilma invites her to attend a meeting of a tenants' association in a public housing project. The tenants' association is going to discuss what to do about the drug dealers in the halls of the project. While HSW is waiting for Wilma to get her car, Henxley asks her to see a young man. Carl Miller enters her office, looking for money. His conversation suggests that he uses drugs. When HSW says that the agency does not give out money, Mr. Miller leaves. Henxley soon notices something missing, and as Wilma and HSW leave, he is getting ready to call the police. The two workers find the tenants assembled. Wilma greets Ms. French, the president of the association. Ms. French is not happy that HSW has been invited without her permission on a day when everyone present is feeling anxious. As the meeting begins, an unwelcome visitor is expelled. The members discuss the problem of the drug dealers. They are concerned about their own safety, but even more concerned about the children who are growing up in the midst of the problem. The discussion turns to what sort of strategy to use to get the police and the housing management to take the problem seriously. The tenants decide to hold a meeting with the captain of the local precinct. As Wilma and HSW return to the office, Wilma asks about Betsy. HSW claims ignorance. As soon as she enters the office, she knocks on Betsy's door. Betsy is looking better, but not sure what to do about her abusive boyfriend. |
