Welcome to Level 5A Reading in The English Language Center's Day
Intensive Program at LaGuardia Community College. This website will
be used by our class to prepare for and complement the readings
discussed in class. Please check this site regularly for updated
information related to the class and computer-realted assignments.
The textbook we will be using is A World of Fiction by Sybil
Marcus. You are required to purchase this book as well as an English-English
dictionary. Our class will meet three times a week for two hour
periods. One-third of our class time will be spent in the computer
lab in C 710. The remainder of the class time will be in a traditional
classroom setting.
How to Navigate This Site:
The Course Syllabus can be found in the Documents
folder. Please refer to this syllabus to see which short stories
you are responsible for having read. Stories not found in the textbook,
reading guideline questions and a compilation of student essays
will also be posted in the Documents folder.
Check the Assignments folder
for information about computer-related homework and classwork.
The Links folder has links to sites
related to the authors and/or themes of the assigned readings. You'll
be referring to the Links folder of this site frequently.
The Communication folder
contains questions for reflection and asynchronous discussion with
your classmates. Each week there will be a new topic for discussion.
You are required to post at least one comment per week on the Discussion
Board.
Finally, the Assessment folder
will have your midterm and final exam, both of which will be done
online.
Language Learning: Learning a language can be a wonderful
and exciting experience. The process of learning is not a passive
one. As a language learner, you need to take risks and be very involved
in learning. Take advantage of the opportunities you will have to
improve your English. Good luck!
