Having a bit of trouble with your electronic
Portfolio? Look at these common mistakes to see if any of these may be
your problem.
1. Save your starting/opening
web page as "index.html"
When you don't save your starting web page as
"index.html" (all lowercase), the web
address for your Portfolio may not work or may not start up with the correct
page. Saving your starting page as "index.html" will save you
a lot of trouble!
2. Do not use spaces or
symbols in your web page or image file names
Of course you have to save your web pages to a disk or hard
drive, but after you upload them to the web some of the links or images may
not work. Make sure that you don't use spaces or symbols (you can use the underscore symbol "_" however)
in the file names when you save your web pages and images. For example,
do not use the name "foundations essay.html." If you want to
use "foundations" and "essay," delete the space or
use an underscore to make the page name "foundationsessay.html" or
"foundations_essay.html"
3. Unable to log on to WS_FTP
If you are having trouble accessing WS_FTP, make sure you
are using your Kalamazoo College E-Mail password, not any other account
password you may have.
4. My text is not visible on
the Internet
Although you may have picked a font that looks quite
flashy, many fonts will not be visible on other computers. If this
happens to you, try changing the font or use the default font.
5. I made changes to my web
pages, but I don't see the changes on the Internet
Although you may have made some changes to your web pages
and saved them, you have to re-upload your changed pages again. Make sure you
upload any new images too.
6. I re-uploaded my changed
pages to the server, but I still don't see the changes on the Internet
Your internet browser will often bring up a page from its
memory cache, rather than from the server itself. If you have recently
changed and re-uploaded your pages, simply hit the "reload" button
on your browser ruler bar after you open your web site. (You may have to click "reload" on every page that
you have changed.) This should show you the changes you've made.
