Introduction
: I was born in 1984 in Fergana, Uzbekistan. I have many hobbies
such as listening to music, drawing, and many other things that make
me happy. I arrived in the United States with my parents two years ago
in 2001. In 2002, I started my first semester at LaGuardia Community
College. I chose this college to improve my English because it has a
good reputation. Now, I am taking ESL099 and Human Services, so that
I can get a better education. In the future, I want to be a psychiatrist,
to help mentally ill people by working in a hospital.
First Selection : Life in a New Country
America is a country which is built by immigrants. Thousands of people come to the United States to have a better life. Everybody has dreams about America. That is why some people call America a land of opportunities. A lot of immigrants who have been coming to the United States have their hopes, such as to get good jobs, an education, and many others. Some immigrants feel happy to live in the United States because the are able to learn English, and to find great jobs. Others do not feel that happy to live here because they are not able to do anything like that because of their age and health problems. Therefore, I would like to write about the day when I arrived in the United States.
My family and I came to the America as refugees in February 11, 2001. We traveled to New York from Uzbekistan by plane for sixteen hours. When we just arrived here, we were so depressed because everything was totally different from Fergana City, our hometown. Of course, we had no idea how we could start our lives from the beginning. The answer was to learn some English and to get good jobs because it is necessary to make some money to survive, especially in New York City.
By the time I arrived here, I already knew how to speak English, but still needed some practice. Since then, I have became very fluent and my accent has became much better because after a while, I took English classes with my older sister in Manhattan. That program helped me a lot because we took grammar and conversation classes. It hasn’t been so easy for me because English is a difficult language.
Later on, I decided to go to college and get a better education for myself. In September of last year I started my first semester at LaGuardia Community College to improve my English, and to make my parents happier because they still cannot speak English. It is very hard for them to learn a new language when they are already over fifty. Despite all these difficulties, I like New York very much because I can take the opportunities which are offered in the United States. In addition, there are a lot of services for immigrants in the United States, so that they could always ask for any help they need from those services.
In conclusion, I would like to tell you
that it is great to live in such a nice and free country as America.
It is also necessary to have great wishes and thoughts of new life
in a new country because they always help us to choose the right way
to live as immigrants.
Second Selection : The Future of Homan Services
America is one of the countries which has been helping new immigrants by providing the services they need, so that they could help them to have a better life. Thousands of people, who come to the United States, receive Human Services, which could help them to survive in a new country. In addition, immigrants can get a lot of opportunities in the United States.
First of all, I would like to tell you, that some people, who migrate to the United States, do not come here because they had wishes to leave their countries. It is because they felt that they or their children won’t have a better life anywhere else. The reason is because of their financial problems, and of the education their children would get in the future.
Secondly, it is very necessary for immigrants to get some help from the community and some organizations, that will need to serve them better in the future, so that they and their children could be independent. Here are some Human Services that immigrants will need in the future; immigration centers, job training, public assistance, food stamps program, English as a second language programs, counseling services, social security, employment services, rehabilitation services, AIDS/HIV services, and many-many others.
No matter, if some immigrants have been already getting these programs and services, they will also need to get them in the future because they will always have some difficulties in changing their lives for new ones.
In conclusion, I would like to add, that not only immigrants will need to get some Human Services, but also people, who were born in the United States will need those services in the future because some people are not able to do everything by themselves, especially if they have some health problems.
