Phyllis E. van Slyck

I am a Professor in the Department of English at LaGuardia Community College in New York City. I have a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature, and I teach writing and literature courses from a global perspective. I am especially interested in postcolonial literature, gender issues, and texts that elucidate the social and cultural construction of identity. LaGuardia Community College is one of the most diverse communities of learning in the United States, possibly, the world. (See diversity section below.) I feel especially fortunate to be teaching in a community where students bring such rich and varied life experiences to the classroom.

The integrated curriculum and collaborative structure of learning communities promotes an integration of multiple perspectives.
