  • Bentenya Chindon Perfomance
    • Date: Friday, October 4, 2019
    • Time: 10:30-12:30pm
    • Place: Poolside Cafe @ LaGuardia CC
    • Admission: Everyone is welcome. Free. Register with the QR code on the flyer.

    • Description: Chindon-ya is an advertising business in Japan, known for their flamboyant costumes and catchy music. Chindon-ya was popular until the post-war period, but their tradition and appearance on streets are fading in modern Japan. The Japanese Program was able to invite professional chindonya performers Bentenya from Japan, who will be performing at LaGuardia on Friday, October 4, 2019. It will be interactive and hands-on experience for audience.

    • Description: Do you have your favorite cosplay costume at home? Then enter the Japan Club's Halloween Costume Contest 2019 for a chance to win $20-$50 in prizes.   • Japan Club's New Year Celebration 2020
    • Date: Wednesday, January 15, 2020

    • Description: This event is to introduce Japanese old traditions and customs on shogatsu (Japanese New Year Day) such as もちつき (mochi-pounding), おせち料理 (Japanese traditional cuisine for New Year Day), こままわし(Japaense top spinning game), かるた (Japanese traditional card game), 絵馬づくり (making Japanese votive tablets), 着物 (Japanese traditional clothes), かきぞめ (Japanese calligraphy), and 年賀状 (Japanese new year greeting cards). All events are hands-on and we will have a lot of giveaways (free samples of Japanese toys etc). Sushi will be served. This event is open to both LaGuardia students and LIC local communities, especially those with Japanese heritage and learners of Japanese language and culture. Children are welcome.

  • Japan Club's Game Day Tournament

    • Description: The game is Super Smash Bros. Ultimate on Nintendo Switch. Prizes: Three $50 gift cards (equivalent to one game software package) for the top players. Entry: Only LaGuardia students are eligible for the tournament. All participants who wish to enter the tournament should be present at Room BA-10 at 2:15pm.

  • Learning About Japan Through Manga And Video Games with Benjamin Boas
    • Date: Friday, May 10, 2019

    • Description: Do you like Japanese anime, manga, video games? Benjamin Boas will talk about how his early love of Japanese pop culture led him to study Japanese, move to Japan, and eventually publish his manga book in Japan. He will also share his experience of becoming an expert on Japan and Japanese popular culture. Benjamin Boas is named by the Japanese Government’s Cabinet Office as a Cool Japan Ambassador; Benjamin is the author of "Learning about Japan through Manga and Video Games," itself a manga published by Shogakukan. He regularly appears in television programs on NHK World.

  • Garyu Taiko (Japanese Drum) Performance
    • Date: Wednesday, May 8, 2019

    • Description: "Alternative Taiko Unit Garyu" is a percussion and performance group Japan. Garyu fuses wadaiko – traditional Japanese drums – with contemporary Western drums, to create a new style of music that moves beyond conventional genres. The Japanese characters for Garyu represents 我 "self" and 龍 "dragon." Like a dragon trying to fly to the heavens, the members of Garyu work constantly to realize their own style of music.   • Sakura Matsuri @ Brooklyn Botanic Garden

    • Description: Sakura Matsuri celebrates nature and renewal, and the two-day festival of Japanese culture, arts, and performances is a tribute to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden’s peerless collection of cherry trees—the largest and most diverse outside Japan. Members of the Japan Club and students in the Japan Studies Program will receive free admission to the event ($25 worth). Lunch will also be provided.     • Description: he Japanese Program at LaGuardia Community College is hosting a group of high school students from University of Tsukuba High School on Wednesday, March 20, 2019. Six students winners of the 19th Nikkei STOCK League (https://manabow.com/sl/study/) are touring New York and they will have a short visit to LaGuardia. This is a great opportunity to learn about life as high school students in Japan and to introduce student life in New York.   • Kirie Workshop by Mr. Shu Kubo
    • Date: Tuesday April 24, 2012

    • Description: Mr. Shu Kubo is a Japan's contemporary artist whose work has appeared on postage stamps and on New Year's greeting cards in Japan. In 2009, he was appointed as Special Advisor for Cultural Exchange of the Agency of Cultural Affairs by the Japanese Government. Kubo creates the paper cutouts using handmade Japanese washi paper, which is dyed a variety of colors. He approaches the paper sheet by sheet, creating a two dimensional work by precisely cutting fine lines with a knife.

    • Description: The Japanese courses (ELJ101/ELJ102/ELJ103/ELJ110) at LaGuardia Community College are planning a visit to the Urasenke Chanoyu Center. The Chanoyu master will demonstrate a tea ceremony in an authentic Japanese-style chamber (there is a small traditional-style Japanese house inside of the building!!). Everyone is welcome to join this event. The tour will take about one hour and it will cost $10-15 per person. You will have a chance to enjoy Japanese tea and traditional Japanese confection.
