Our Best Advice
Whether at work or at school seek out mentors to help you do more than just survive the transition to college/work. Your goal should be to flourish! Make use of all available resources and observe and learn from those around you how best to progress in your career.
At your four year school a good place to start is with the office responsible for career development. Learn about and use the services and take advantage of all the opportunities offered. Time slips away but don’t let the opportunities. Just as at Queensborough Community College, there are people at the four year school interested and invested in your success. Don’t be shy about finding them and letting them know you are ready and willing to do the work necessary to further your own career.
If you are about to begin a new job do your best to learn the culture of your place of employment and what is expected of you. Always aim to surpass expectations. Seek out a mentor - someone in your field or at the organization that can help you navigate those first crucial months. Remember that managers and co-workers will be forming opinions of you on a daily basis so begin each day with a hard-working, positive and collaborative attitude.
Finally, remember that few people experience a smooth trajectory to career success without some setbacks. Learn from your experiences and mistakes and move forward. The professional skills you have learned thus far will serve you well in the future. Take every opportunity in the future to sharpen your skills and keep learning. Strive to improve yourself professionally and personally every day and you will succeed.
Best of luck always in all your endeavors,
