Reasonable Accommodations

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) protects individuals with disabilities from discrimination. At Queensborough, this protection covers all applicants for employment, employees, students, and visitors to our campus.  Under the ADA, reasonable accommodations and academic adjustments can be requested for work and learning environments to facilitate essential functions and benefits enjoyed by nondisabled persons. In addition to accommodations for temporary and permanent disabilities, community members can request accommodations for religion, pregnancy/childbirth/or related medical conditions, and their status as victims of domestic violence/sex offense/or stalking. 

Due to the varied nature of the four types of available accommodations, the point of contact for each accommodation varies according to the population served. Please click below for information regarding the points of contact to request accommodations or to appeal decisions made about requests.

Americans with Disability Act, Section 504

Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 prohibits discrimination against qualified individuals with disabilities by any program or activity receiving federal financial assistance. Each CUNY campus has a designated 504/ADA Coordinator.  At Queensborough, the Chief Diversity Officer is the designated coordinator.

The responsibilities of the 504/ADA Coordinator are:

  • Monitor the College for 504/ADA compliance
  • Resolve issues before they become potential grievances
  • Consider appeals and disputed accommodation decisions
  • Chair the 504/ADA Committee
  • Maintain information on accommodations requested and provided
  • Ensure that pertinent records are stored securely and that confidentiality is maintained
  • Provide training, as needed, on issues related to individuals with disabilities.

 

504/ADA Committee
The 504/ADA Committee serves as an advisory committee to the 504/ADA Coordinator.  It assists the 504/ADA Coordinator in formulating new ideas and monitoring the College for 504/ADA compliance. It is comprised of representatives from various divisions, departments, and programs, including the Office of Services for Students with Disabilities.
