Dr. Van Der Horn-Gibson received her Ph.D. in theatre from Arizona State University and has taught a broad range of theatre, film, and communication courses in the New York City region. Her research focuses primarily on representations of race and gender in pop culture, as well as developing equitable and inclusive practices for the classroom. She has presented her research at regional, national, and international conferences, and has had published work in theatre, film, and communication.
Dr. Van Der Horn-Gibson was Co-PI on a Contemplative Communities in Higher Education grant for the project “Community College Students in Action, Reflection & Transformation (ACT): Contemplative Reflections on Identity Construction Through Theatre of the Oppressed Techniques.” She and colleague Ashlie Klepper, were awarded the CETL Pedagogical Research Award to study the impact of implementing instructional rubrics in the Speech Communication course.
And while at Queensborough, she and a student collaborated on the History Matters/Back to the Future Sallie Bingham Grant, which provides production funds for a faculty mentored student-led project. This award culminated in a student-directed production of Adrienne Kennedy’s play The Owl Answers. Additionally, their project was the sole community college recipient from applications across the nation.
Her most recent publications include: “Filling the ‘whole hole of History’: (rest)ing in Suzan-Lori Parks’ Interregnum” in GPI: Global Performance Studies with Performance Studies International, and “‘This is America’: The Shifting Landscape of Black Masculinity in Film.” Currently she is working on “Kaleidoscopic Histories: The Resurgence of Afro-surrealism in Contemporary Performance.”
