The Academic Senate Committee on eLearning met on November 8, 2023


Committee Members in Attendance:

eLearning Committee Members: Anthony Monahan (Chair-2024), Shenaz Ida (secretary-2025), Humberto Morales (2024), Fei, Ye (2024), Daniel Garbin (2025), Gabriel Lataianu (2025), Barbara Frary (2026), Emily El Halouani (2026), Mohammad Javdan (2026)

Designees: Arthur Corradetti (Dean for Institutional Effectiveness, OAA), Denis Behar (IT Academic Applications Director) , Zivah Perel Katz (Steering Committee Disignee)

Present: Anthony Monahan (chair), Shenaz Ida (secretary), Barbara Frary, Humberto Morales, Fei Ye.

Absent: Emily El Halouani, Mohammed Javdan (teaching), Daniel Garbin (teaching), Gabriel Lataianu (no longer with QCC), Zivah Perel Katz (no longer a steering committee member), Arthur Corradetti, Denis Bejar.


Business:

The meeting was called to order at 03:04 PM

Old Business

  • Welcome back remarks by Chairperson.
  • Approval of previous meeting minutes (05/18/2023)-approved
  • Open Discussion for members to select new day and time for meetings:
  • Agreed by majority of members that Wednesday from 1-2 pm is the best, therefore new times is the second Wednesday every month from 1-2 pm.
  • Committee is short one member, waiting for response from QCC-CoC
  • Committee Addendum: Submitted and accepted. Posted on QCC website.
  • Committee Charges: e-Learning committee charges was reviewed by chairperson.
  • Committee Report and response:
    • Discussed Guidelines for best practices in the online environment. Instructions to college committee members to the above and to think about ways to make contributions.
    • CETL: Tony will collaborate with Meg Tarafdar (Director of CETL) to inquire how we can help.
    • Work on Assessment will need up-to-date version, idea suggested for faculty to perform a self-assessment such as faculty participating in continuing education for online teaching. Currently Barbara is taking ACUE training.
    • Committee members to think about topics for e-Learning committee newsletter to discuss at next meeting.
    • Tony spoke with Benjamin Wade (Student government) about getting student representation for the e-Learning committee.

New Business

Switch from Blackboard to Brightspace:  The CUNY Role out of BrightSpace LMS will be done over a 2- year period with training starting in the spring 2024 and faculty to teach in Summer 24 or Fall 24.  By Fall 2025 all CUNY will be fully converted to Brightspace.  QCC is schedule to transition starting in Spring, 24.  Denis Bejar will discuss further. Ka Cheng is the Academic Support specialist from information technology that faculty can reach out to with questions and support transition of the Brightspace LMS.

 

Open Discussion: best ways to achieve our committee goals. Committee members to think about possible topics for the e-learning newsletter and items for faculty self-assessment for next meeting.
