Steering Committee Report February 2020
Steering Committee welcomes everyone to Spring Semester 2020, and looks forward to a productive semester of shared governance.
The Presidential Search process began in earnest this month. The search firm with whom the university has contracted conducted meetings with students, faculty governance leaders, foundation board members, and administrators on February 3 and 4 to fully understand the qualifications desired in QCC’s next leader. Thanks go to Interim President Lynch for keeping all stakeholders apprised of developments in the search process.
Election season is beginning at QCC. Monitor your email this month for announcements from Committee on Committees regarding processes for applying to serve on the Academic Senate and Senate Standing Committees, and do encourage colleagues to participate. Standing Committees in particular benefit from robust, dedicated membership, and offer potential for leadership. Thanks go to Stephen Hammel, chair of CoC, and Dave Moretti, Senate Technology Officer for their service in this process.
The process of dividing the Pre-College, Continuing Education, and Workforce Development Committee into two separate committees continues. Thanks to the Bylaws Committee for their votes on the changes of charges required in dividing the committees. SC continues to develop instruments of assessing effectiveness of Senate Standing Committees, including surveys of committee members.
The Anti-Bullying Committee met in December 2019 and began the process of assessing other institutions’ policies and a May, 2014 draft of a policy created by QCC stakeholders. The meeting was productive: compelling rationales for a policy were given, evidence of practices elsewhere were examined, and important questions about the viability of a policy at QCC were raised. Further meetings will take place throughout the semester and all aspects of a policy will be tackled. The committee will report findings to the Senate in May.
Thanks again for a productive Fall 2019 Semester, and we look forward to good work together in 2020.
