Steering Committee Report February 2023
The semester has started strongly with encouraging enrollment numbers. We thank VP Stephen Di Dio for his part in choosing political campaign telephone software to reach out to students who needed an assist in registering for the Spring 2023 semester. The software was intuitive and effective and has much potential for improved contact with students during registration periods. We are grateful to Emily El Halouani for her outstanding work assisting volunteers in the calling process, and to President Mangino who led efforts to recruit volunteers and build enthusiasm for a collaborative effort. This bodes well for a future of endeavor and growth together.
The Cabinet presented a thorough and inspiring State of the College Address on Thursday, February 2nd. The financial situation remains serious, but we appreciate our colleagues’ efforts to present information clearly and completely and with encouragement as a hallmark of their leadership.
Ellen Hartigan is again stepping up to serve Queensborough in the interim following the departure of Dean of Continuing Education Hui-Yin Hsu. Thank you, Ellen, for being there when we need you!
Senate election and Standing Committee selection season is here. We can’t overstate the need to share more widely among us the responsibility of committee service. Chairpersons, please encourage your faculty to serve on committees and work for the good of our college, and senators, invite your colleagues to run for a three-year Senate seat. An email from the Committee on Committees will be sent on February 15th – in the email will be an opportunity to select committees on which to serve. An email from Committee on Committees on February 27th will include a link with which potential candidates for the fourteen Faculty-Member-at-Large vacancies may gather signatures to support their nomination. We thank Danny Sexton, chair; Julian Stark, secretary; Christine Mooney, past chair of Committee on Committees and Raj Vaswani of the Office of Information Technology for their major efforts in making a smooth election season.
At the February meeting the WID/WAC Annual Report for 2021-2022 will be shared with the Senate. Steering Committee apologizes for an oversight – the report was submitted in Fall Semester and should have been presented to the Senate then. We thank committees for completing their Annual Reports. We await reports from the committees on Admissions, Committees, Computer Resources, and Publications.
We again thank all our colleagues for their determination to serve our students and the health of our college as we move onward and upward into Spring 2023.
