Steering Committee Report March 2020
Faculty Governance Leaders with input from faculty representatives are working with affected departments to address issues of course overlap that may occur among departments offering courses in Computer Science and Computer Information Systems. A proposal for a Special Committee to address any overlap among CS courses proposed by the Math and Computer Sciences Department and CIS courses already existing in the Business Department may be ready for a vote at the March meeting of the Academic Senate. Courses in both departments are important avenues for transfer to senior colleges, and it is hoped that a committee consisting of representatives from both departments, the Curriculum Committee, and the Computer Resources Committee, with designees from the Steering Committee and the Office of Academic Affairs will find a path forward for these courses that will be appropriate for all departments.
A primary component of the email communications system adopted by the Senate in October 2019 has been in effect since November 2019. The trial period for that component – the restoration of Faculty Dialogues distribution list as an opt-out system – will be completed on April 30, 2020.
The Publications Committee, chaired by Aviva Geismar, Assistant Professor in the Department of Health, Physical Education, and Dance, has formed a sub-committee that is working to advise departments on best practices in creating and maintaining their webpages. The sub-committee shares only two members with the Publications parent committee, thus providing a good service opportunity to faculty members not currently on a Standing Committee. The subcommittee is working in consultation with Marketing.
The work of the Academic Master Plan Steering Committee and Working Groups is continuing. A reminder email requesting participation in an important planning survey was sent by the Office of Academic Affairs on Monday, March 2. Faculty input in the development of the AMP is of paramount importance, so if you haven’t already, please complete the survey by 11:59 PM, March 3rd. Also, please take part in the AMP Curriculum Working Group open forum Wednesday, March 4th from 12:30 – 2:00 PM in the Social Sciences Building, Room M 142.
SC has especially appreciated faculty input this past month as we address important matters. As we all work together to keep our college healthy, it’s a good time to remind the whole community of common sense physical health measures sent by a member of the University Faculty Senate Executive Committee: wash hands frequently, use paper towels in restrooms to turn on and off faucets and open doors, and be mindful when touching shared surfaces such as elevator buttons – wash hands after and/or use a knuckle.
