Steering Committee October 2024

The Steering Committee wishes to acknowledge and thank the Public Safety Department for their efforts to keep our campus a positive and safe environment for all. We understand that recent incidents both on and off campus have caused safety concerns, and we appreciate that both the Public Safety and President's offices have been transparent in providing our community with updates about the incidents as well as maintain efforts to keep our campus a thriving and safe community for faculty, staff, and students.

We want to thank those Standing Committees who have posted their Annual Reports. We would like to reiterate the importance of submitting Annual Reports, which are the means by with the Academic Senate can be apprised of committees' activities throughout the academic year. Additionally, the Steering Committee requires these reports in order to provide updated charges for the current academic year. Both the Steering Committee and the Committee on Committees continually reach out to Standing Committees for support in their work thought the academic year, and our efforts to engage wish committees is heavily dependent on the ability to assess previous years' activities. Please do not hesitate to reach out to the Steering Committee should there be any issues or concerns with drafting or posting Annual Reports.

As of the date of this report, a total of 3 faculty members have volunteered for and were appointed to the newly formed Special Committee on Artificial Intelligence. Our goal is to have 7 faculty members on this committee, with no more than one faculty member from any academic unit. Priority will be given to those who have not been assigned service to a Standing Committee. Please email the Steering Committee if you would like to volunteer to serve on this special committee.

During the November Senate, the Steering Committee will be conducting a short presentation about Zoom SSO login procedures. Our goal is that by the February 2025 meeting we will achieve 100% Zoom login among Senators. Attendance, polling, and collection of data for accurate minutes are much more secure and reliable with the use of Zoom, and we therefore would like to move away from the use of paper ballots.

Lastly, the Steering Committee will be holding Zoom meetings on October 9 and 16 from 12 - 1pm for Chairs and Secretaries of Standing Committees. During these meetings we will be discussing strategies for streamlining workflow, procedures for submission of important documents, maintenance of committee webpages, and navigation within Cascade. Chairs and Secretaries of Standing Committees will receive email invitations to attend one of these two meetings.
