Steering Committee Report September 2021
Steering Committee welcomes everyone back to another year of shared governance and continued effort to serve our students as effectively as possible. We congratulate President Christine Mangino on an excellent first year of service, and for the Citation of Honor presented to her on August 17th by Queens Borough President Donovan Richards.
On September 2, 2021, Governor Kathy Hochul signed into Law Chapter 417 of the Laws of 2021 which, in part, authorizes most public bodies “to meet and take such action authorized by law without permitting in public in-person access to meetings and authorizes such meetings to be held remotely by conference call or similar service, provided that the public has the ability to view or listen to such proceeding and that such meetings are recorded and later transcribed.” Therefore, through January 15th 2022, the Senate will meet in Hybrid format, with optional in-person attendance by Senators. The Zoom meetings will be video recorded and transcribed.
We welcome to the Senate Student Government Association officers: Navneet Sandhu, President; Audrey Arias, Administrative Vice President; Chloe Chery, Programming Vice President; Olamiposi Akinfeleye, Treasurer; Charlayne Hurlington, Vice President for Part Time Students; and Sofia Rosado, Vice President for Evening Students.
Faculty Governance leaders worked through the Summer again this year on the process of a safe reopening. We thank the Administration for, as always, assuring our place in this important task, and thank them for presenting regular town halls throughout the Summer to provide maximum clarity.
SC thanks President Mangino for her continued support for Senate activity in the form of Reassigned Time for certain Senate Standing Committee officers. The Senate request for 24 hours Reassigned Time, distributed by SC, is at the same level as 2020-21. The enumeration of officers' duties, as presented to the President, may be seen here and under Monthly Reports at the Steering Committee webpage.
SC thanks the following Senate Standing Committees for their timely posting to their webpages of their Annual Reports: Assessment and Institutional Effectiveness, Amos Orlovsky and Mi-Seon Kim, co-chairs; Awards and Scholarships, Ewa Stelmach, chair; Continuing Education and Workforce Development, Philip Nelan, chair; Environment, Quality of Life, and Disability Issues, Chantale Damas, chair; Pre-College, Phil Pecorino, chair: Vendor Services, Gheorghe Proteasa, chair; WID/WAC, Jeff Hall, chair.
Maintaining a productive atmosphere on both Community and Faculty Dialogues continues occasionally to be a problem. Faculty Governance Leaders are working together to consider best practices in moving forward. The aim is to provide a forum for constructive dialogue without undue distraction from college business.
We can be proud of our efforts as a community to meet the needs of our students during an ongoing pandemic. We hope that acknowledging the successes that we have achieved amidst massive challenges will provide everyone with a sense of tailwinds as we move through Fall, 2021.
