President's Report for April 2023

Enrollment Management Update

The Office of Admissions and Recruitment is celebrating “Community College Month” during April with an extensive list of recruitment opportunities. Prospective and accepted students, families, and school groups can take advantage of in-person or virtual events to learn more about QCC, how to finance their college education, learn about specific academic programs and special programs, or take an in-person tour. In addition to Community College Month, the office of admissions also hosted a successful New Student Week during Monday, April 10th – Thursday, April 13th. New Student Week also kicked off new student advisement and registration. In addition to internal events, the recruitment team has participated in 40 external events since February 3, such as high school college fairs and classroom presentations and is scheduled to attend an additional 27 external events for this recruitment season which will conclude at the end of May. The Office of New Student Engagement will launch its fall 2023 Tips for Success Webinars and QCC Days beginning Wednesday, May 3rd. From May 3 to August 22, the Office of New Student Engagement will host 20 new student engagement virtual and in-person events. This year, Tips for Success webinars will include additional engagement opportunity for students to learn about transfer opportunities beyond their associate degree. The Office of Academy Advisement is preparing for the opening of registration for new and continuing students. They will offer all advising modalities for students, including daily walk-in services. Advisement traffic has increased with students expressing interest in summer and fall registration. They are following their “March is Advising” month campaign with two April events to encourage students to seek advisement registration as early as possible. On Wednesday, April 12th from 6:00 – 7:00 pm, they will co–sponsor an Instagram Live event with Bursar and Financial Aid offices to highlight important policies and procedures and answer live questions from students. On Wednesday, April 19th, Academy Advisement will host a tabling event on-campus from 12:00 – 2:00 pm at the Science Atrium to market the Academy Advising office, take student appointments and encourage students to walk-in to the advising office for assistance. Academy Advisement is focused on first year students too and will call all first semester students with advising holds to connect them with their adviser. In March, advisement hosted two (2) curriculum review sessions with faculty and a student affairs resource training for all advisers in preparation for the busy registration cycle. Lastly, they are planning to set up a financial aid training session for academic advisers in April.

 

Student Honors/Achievements

QCC students Mr. Brandon Ackerman and Ms. Rose Felix were named to the Phi Theta Kappa All-New York Academic Team, in recognition of their scholarly achievements while enrolled in a New York Community College. Mr. Ackerman was named to the 2nd team, while Ms. Felix was named 1st team. I extend my thanks to Dr. Emily Tai and Dr. Regina Sullivan for their tireless work as faculty advisers to Queensborough’s Lambda Sigma Chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society.

 

Commencement Ceremony

• Queensborough’s 62nd Annual Commencement Ceremony will take place in-person on Friday, June 2nd on the Athletic Field. Faculty and HEO-series employees who wish to participate in the ceremony must order their regalia online no later than the deadline date of Thursday, May 4th. Faculty and HEO-series employees who plan to march and have their own attire must notify Ms. Annette Lazaro via email at ALazaro@qcc.cuny.edu to ensure that you are included in the seating count. • Outreach is already underway for fall 2022 graduates well as prospective spring 2023 graduates. Students who anticipate graduating at the conclusion of summer 2023 and wish to participate in the June 2 ceremony MUST self-identify by taking the following action:

 

• 1. Speak with their academic adviser about their remaining degree requirements and if they can be completed during the summer 2023 session (pending course availability).

 

• 2. If their adviser agrees that they can be completed during the summer 2023 session, they must register for them no later than Friday, May 5th.

 

• 3. After registering, the student must contact Graduation Audit at GradAudit@qcc.cuny.edu and the email should include the student's full name, 8-digit EMPL ID# and a brief message indicating their plan to complete their degree requirements during the summer 2023 session and participate in the June 2 ceremony. Graduation Audit will verify their enrollment and if they are an eligible summer 2023 graduation candidate, their graduation status will be updated in CUNYFirst and will be put on a list to receive an invitation to the ceremony.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Student Support Resources

• All currently enrolled students wishing to receive financial aid for the Summer 2023, Fall 2023 and/or Spring 2024 semesters were advised to complete the 2023-2024 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by the Priority Filing Date of April 19, 2023. Students who miss this date are encouraged to complete the FAFSA immediately. For more information and zoom appointments for assistance, please visit the QCC Financial Aid Website.

 

• Faculty and staff are asked to encourage our students to avail themselves of the valuable and free resources through the QCC Advocacy Resource Center. Services provided include (but are not limited to) public benefits screening, financial coaching, legal assistance, tax preparation services, housing assistance, food pantry referrals, and more.

 

• Emergency funding is available to students who face a financial crisis that puts at risk their continued enrollment toward their QCC degree. Supported through a grant from The Carroll and Milton Petrie Foundation, the funds provide one-time, emergency grants to students in good standing with short-term financial emergencies to enable them to remain in school, rather than being forced to leave or drop out. Students with short-term financial emergencies should be referred to Ms. Amawati Gonesh, Advocacy Resource Center Program Manager, via e-mail at AGonesh@qcc.cuny.edu.  Additional information can be found online at QCC Scholarships.

 

• The 2023 Abbey Duncan Brownfield Scholarship Program is now accepting applications. The program provides financial support to undergraduate and graduate students pursuing careers in the brownfield industry in New York City. The deadline to apply is April 18, 2023.

 

• The Finch College Alumni Community College Transfer Scholarship application period is now open for all eligible female students. The scholarships, worth $5000, are awarded to second-year female community college students who will graduate from QCC at the conclusion of spring 2023 and transfer to a four-year university for fall 2023. For additional information, including eligibility requirements, visit their website. The deadline to apply is May 1, 2023.

 

• The Milton Fisher Scholarship for Innovation and Creativity is not a traditional scholarship focused on rewarding academic achievement and financial need. Its specific goal is to reward and encourage innovative and creative problem solving. The scholarship aims to honor students who excel as creative problem solvers and to help make their higher education goals more accessible. Upcoming Events

• Now through the end of the spring 2023 semester, Free HIV/STI Testing is available for students, faculty, and staff in the Office of Health Services.  Testing will take place between the hours of 11:00 am – 3:00 pm on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday (except during spring break). Testing services will be provided by Northwell Health, AIDS Center for Queens County (ACQC), and The LGBT Network.

 

• The QCC Male Resource Center is inviting all students to get a free hair cut on Monday, April 17th from 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm in the Student Union – Upper Level, as part of their Barber Shop Day initiative. The purpose of the event is to provide students with a free haircut to show that we care about the current economic hardships that many are going through right now. A haircut provides a high level of confidence to anyone who receives one. When an individual feels good, they are less stressed and ready to take on all tasks whether personally, professionally or academically.

 

• All students invited to attend the online Financial Literacy Workshop: Introduction to Credit, Credit Scores, and Credit Reports, taking place on Tuesday, April 18th at 12:00 pm. At the workshop, conducted by the New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG), students will learn how to establish credit; gain access to your credit score and read credit reports; strategies on improving credit and credit scores; disputing errors on credit reports.

 

• The Annual Wellness Festival will take place on Wednesday, April 19th from 11:00 am – 3:00 pm in the Student Union – Upper Level. The event is open to all QCC students as well as faculty & staff and will feature information tabling, free health screenings and giveaway items. • The QCC Commencement Team will host a second Commencement Webinar for Class of 2023 QCC Graduates on Wednesday, April 19th at 12:10 pm via Zoom.  During the Zoom meeting, graduation candidates will receive information about the ceremony itself, completing the remainder of their degree requirements during the summer 2023 semester if necessary, how to apply for transfer to a 4-year college/university for the fall 2023 semester if they haven't already applied, and much more. Representatives from the Office of Academy Advisement, Office of Graduation Audit, and the Transfer Resource Center will be present to answer any questions candidates may have.  Registration is required for this event!

 

• All students are invited to a reflective workshop offered by the QCC Counseling Center, “Anxious When Taking A Test?” on Wednesday, April 19th at 2:00 pm.  This will be a reflective workshop where we uncover what makes college students anxious. Time will be given to understand what makes you anxious and then work on identifying healthy anxiety reducing techniques.  Registration is required for this event!

 

• The QCC Male Resource Center will be hosting an event on Wednesday, April 26th, "Short Film Discussion", where students will have the opportunity to watch two (2) short independent films "Five Deep Breaths" and "Spider." Following each film, they will discuss how these films mirror our environment and our decisions on how we navigate life. The Short Film Discussion will take place at Oakland Dining Hall from 3:00 – 4:00 pm.
• The New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG) will offer an online Financial Literacy Workshop: Debt on Thursday, April 27th at 12:00 pm for all students. During the workshop, students will learn about debt repayment strategies and debt mitigation strategies; assistance with dealing with debt collectors; handing ID theft; wage garnishment and frozen bank accounts; student loan repayment options; and guidance on defaulted student loans.

 

• The QCC Male Resource Center will host an Understanding Your Credit workshop for students on Thursday, April 27th. At the workshop, students will learn about credit and how to use credit responsibly. This workshop will help students navigate the different forms of credit that a person can obtain and providing some understanding on those forms so individuals can make informed decisions moving forward. This workshop will take place in the Student Union - Upper Level from 2:30 - 3:30pm.

 

• Yearbook Portraits for the graduating class of 2023 (fall 2022, winter 2023, spring 2023 and summer 2023 graduates) will take place beginning Monday, May 1st – Thursday, May 4th in the Student Union Building – Lower Level. To schedule a Portrait Appointment, students can call the Office of Student Activities at (718) 631-6233, email Ms. Cha Huang at chuang@qcc.cuny.edu, or visit the Office of Student Activities, located in the Student Union, Lower Level. All students an making an in-person campus appointment must comply with CUNY's COVID-19 Vaccination Policy.

 

• On Tuesday, May 2nd at 12:00 pm, the New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG) will offer an online Financial Literacy Workshop: Taxes. This workshop, which is open to all students, will focus on a general tax introduction; preparing taxes; guidance on paying tax debt; and developing financial habits and growth mindset.

 

• To close out the spring 2023 semester, the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs will host a Class of 2023 Graduation Fair/End of Semester Celebration on Wednesday, May 10th at 12:10 pm in the Humanities Quadrangle.  At the celebration, students as well as prospective graduates will be able to celebrate the end of the semester and upcoming graduation ceremony with free tacos from El Toro Rojo Taco Truck as well as tasty shaved ice treats from Pelican's Snoballs. In addition, prospective graduates can stop by our information table should they have any questions about this year’s commencement ceremony.

 

• The Annual Spring Blood Drive will take place on Thursday, May 11th from 8:00 am – 4:00 pm in the Student Union – Upper Level. There is an ongoing blood supply shortage that strains the ability of our community to meet the critical health needs of its people. As a member of the Queensborough community you can make a difference. Every drop counts. All students, faculty and staff are welcome. To donate blood, you must be 17 years of age, or older, and weigh at least 110 pounds and have not received a tattoo or body piercings within the past year. Please be sure to eat a meal before attending the blood drive. Remember, even donating a small amount of blood can help save a life. Please consider participating in this important event, which is sponsored by the Maimonides Medical Center.

Office of Center for Excellence in Teaching and learning (CETL) and the Office of Educational Technology (OET)

The Center for Excellence in Teaching & Learning (CETL) continues to offer professional development opportunities and individual consultations regarding instructional practices. Faculty who are integrating High Impact Practices (HIPs) in their courses are requested to complete the HIPs designation form to designate their courses on CUNYfirst. Presentations on HIPs and OER projects will be featured during the Spring Student Symposium on Fri, May 5. All faculty are invited to participate at this event. Please register here.

The QCC Art Gallery, in collaboration with the Taiwanese American Arts Council, presents both a workshop & seminar that coincides with an art exhibition entitled NYC Art Bridge: Wellness Through Art that will be on display from April 20th through June 30th, 2023.

 

Art and creation can be a catalyst for mental wellness. Art with intention is an innovative way to provide a safe space to promote open dialogue about mental health in a culturally informed manner. By facilitating art that is guided by cultural experience, we can approach art as an inner demand and make it a conscious way to express wellness, care, and vulnerability.

 

For the art exhibition, contemporary artists of diverse backgrounds will respond to societal pressures, investigate the exquisiteness of the universe, and how it relates to the miracle of the human condition. The selected artists were asked to create works based on their own familial experiences, family history, immigrant stories, racial discrimination, internalized racial trauma, mental health issues, parenting conflicts, and cultural identity. Disciplines will include a wide range of visual and performing art. Artists will discuss their content and reflect on community issues generated during the pandemic. These works will support the CHATogther stimulating the conversation for the workshop and seminar.

 

CHATogether is a program that aims to facilitate child-parent communication, break stigma, and develop effective coping skills in a culturally sensitive manner.

The CHATogether Workshop is presented and moderated by Dr. Eunice Yuen, MD, Ph.D., founder, and Director of CHATogether, Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Yale School of Medicine and Yale Child Study Center and Luchia Meihua Lee, Curator and Executive Director, Taiwanese American Arts Council.

 

 

 

Workshop & Seminar – CHATogether – April 29, 2023 - 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Presented and moderated by Dr. Eunice Yuen, MD, PH.D., founder and Director of CHATogether, Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Yale School of Medicine and Yale Child Study Center.
Artists and students will be recruited to construct story-telling skits to showcase children-parent conflict scenarios and construct role-playing dialogues. Topics will include cross-cultural challenges, emotional management, and stigmas associated with certain mental concerns that are commonly shared among Asian American child-parent dyads. 

 

Internship Program:
The Gallery continues the internship program in person serving students from both QCC and local high schools. The internship program demonstrates undergraduate research by providing unique opportunities for the individual to develop practical experience in the art administration field. The participating individuals continue to help document the permanent collection and incoming donations. 

• The Gallery hosts two (2) interns from the Gallery and Museum Studies program through the Department of Art & Design. Interns assist with documentation of the collection and incoming donations and inputting the objects into the permanent collection database (Re: Proficio). 

 

• The Gallery’s internship with Flushing International High School and Bayside High School resumed this spring semester and hosts four (4) student interns.

The Concentration Camps: Inside the Nazi System of Incarceration and Genocide

This year, the KHC will be offering self-guided audio tours of its original exhibition which surveys the scope and brutality of the Nazi system of incarceration and genocide, underscoring the horrific consequences of antisemitism, racism, and authoritarianism. In addition to the exhibit’s text, images, and artifacts, personal testimonies from local Holocaust survivors offer painful insights into these excruciating landscapes of degradation and dehumanization. This exhibit is curated by Dr. Cary Lane, KHC 2020-21 Curator-in-Residence and Associate Professor of English at QCC.

As part of its efforts to provide cultural and artistic opportunities to students where a lack of arts programming is evident, QPAC provides performance workshops in which participants learn acting, dance and musical theater techniques from degreed professionals and Broadway performers. The workshops are designed to connect professional artists with young audiences throughout the year to develop a life-long appreciation of the arts. Our workshops are shaped to the interests and level of each group. Students receive individual coaching and feedback from the instructor. Teaching artists hired reflect New York City's multi-ethnic communities.

Sponsored by Council Members James F. Gennaro, Linda Lee, and Sandra Ung to assist in providing affordable, cultural & artistic programs in the community. QPAC invites children, ages 8-14, to participate in a new dance workout offered on Saturdays. Much like the popular adult version of this program, choreography as seen on Broadway is re-created to provide a fun way of working out. Students learn from Broadway Performers who reflect the diversity of the borough.

Backed by a live band, the Bee Gees Gold Tribute recreates the look and sound of the Bee Gees from the 60's to the late 70's, with their unique falsettos and the songs that made them legends. John Acosta has performed as Barry Gibb all over the world. His portrayal of the lead singer has a zest for detail like no other. From the face to the falsetto, Acosta’s portrayal of Barry Gibb is spot on! Joining him is Daryl Borges (Robin) and Jeff Celentano (Maurice) as the brothers Gibb. QPAC’s From Page to Stage (On-Going Faculty Collaborations):

Virtual reenactments of classic novels and plays, historic events, and dramatic readings. An ongoing series of educational presentations (done live and recorded for continued use). These virtual renditions of great works will be available in perpetuity for use by the collaborating department (English, Theater, History, Language, Media classes, etc.). Any work can be researched, rehearsed, and presented. Historic speeches can be recreated. There is NO fee for this service. After the initial live presentation, these works can be utilized in the classroom over and over. Special in-person live events can be accommodated for which classes can be invited.

 

THE SUBMISSION PROCESS IS ON-GOING:

• Requests for adaptations will be reviewed on an on-going basis.
• Faculty can request specific works by sending an email to Susan Agin, Executive & Artistic Director, QPAC (SAgin@qcc.cuny.edu). 
• Assuming the availability of the material and copyright permissions, a performance/recording schedule will be submitted within two weeks following each proposal received.

Queensborough Celebrates National Arab American Heritage Month

2023 marks the second annual commemoration of National Arab American Heritage Month. Throughout the month of April, we will be highlighting the heritage, culture, and contributions of Arab Americans—both to our nation and Queensborough in particular—in creative and informative ways.

 

Queensborough’s 62^nd Commencement Ceremony 

Planning and preparation is underway to celebrate the Queensborough Class of ‘23 Graduates for this year’s Ceremony! It will take place on Friday, June 2nd. Something new for 2023 is a Commencement Fair, to be hosted on Wednesday, May 10^th during club hours on the Quad. The hope is to have a DJ present to make the event a festive one, while also having a food truck and ice cream truck available for attendees. We are all looking forward to celebrating the outstanding achievements of our graduates. More details to follow! 

 

The Collective

 

The Collective is a collaboration between the Creative Writing Club and English Department and serves as a literary journal and visual compendium. It is always engaging and an exposé of the talents and diverse lived experiences of our students, featuring original poetry, fiction, non-fiction, and artwork. Its mission is to create community through creativity. It will be available both online and in print in May of 2022.

  

Student Communications: New Virtual Assistant is Nearly Ready to Go! 

Update: The Office of Marketing and Communications has programmed the AI Virtual Assistant within the college's texting platform which would enable students to receive general Q&A support around the clock. A rollout plan is now being finalized.

Four Queensborough students were selected as semifinalists of the Jack Kent Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship. The Foundation awards community college students who have demonstrated exceptional academic ability, leadership, service, and a determination to complete their bachelor’s degrees at top four-year institutions. Queensborough has a distinguished history of nominees, AND FOUR WINNERS! 

Five Queensborough Students Chosen to Participate in a VentureWell OPEN Conference Panel

Held in March, the VentureWell OPEN conference brought together faculty, administrators, staff, and students from the STEM fields to share innovation and entrepreneurship experiences and research, learn best practices, and forge dynamic new relationships. Led by Dr. Christine Mooney of the Business Department and Blackstone Program Director, Queensborough’s six-week cohort, which included several Queensborough students and alumni, were focused on developing an entrepreneurial mindset, beginning with customer discovery. The students attended problem-identification workshops and uncovered community-based issues. From there, they worked with mentors to define and better understand the problem. Dr. Mooney reports that the engagement has been enthusiastic. “They keep coming back!” she said.
