President's Report for May 2021
Student Affairs
Enrollment Management Update
- The Office of Admissions continues to work to recruit students to apply for admission for the fall 2021 semester. A series of e-mails, postcards, and text messaging are being employed in our recruitment efforts. In addition, Weekly Information Sessions will be hosted by staff in the Office of Admissions every Wednesday at 4:00 pm. Saturday Information Days are scheduled for one Saturday a month through July. Conversion activities have been on going to attract admitted students to make the choice to attend QCC. All of these activities will continue throughout the summer.
- The Office of Academy Advisement continues to advise and register continuing students for the fall 2021 semester. Advisement and registration of new students for fall 2021 began on Friday, April 30th, which includes readmitted, new transfer, and first year students. We are excited to have on-boarded a new group of student leaders, who are serving as Tiger Advisers to help students navigate the registration process on CUNY First and Schedule Builders, as well as Degree Works and Starfish. The Tiger Advisers will provide assistance to get students registered quickly and efficiently for fall 2021. We continue to see a high volume of students seeking advisement. Academy Advisement will be co-hosting an Instagram Live session with Dr. Carrie Diamond-Feldman of the Counseling Center, who will be engaging students in a discussion on mindfulness, meditation, and coping strategies to manage stress. We are committed to providing students with various strategies and resources to help support student retention.
Virtual Commencement Ceremony
Queensborough’s 60th Annual Commencement Ceremony will take place on Friday, June 4, 2021 at 11:00 am. This year’s ceremony, similar to last year, is an online/virtual event. Ceremony details will include a tribute to our graduates from QCC President, Dr. Christine Mangino; Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Timothy G. Lynch; faculty leaders, and special guest speakers. Students who graduated at the conclusion of fall 2020 and winter 2021, as well as students who may be eligible for graduation at the conclusion of Spring & Summer 2021 are invited to participate in the ceremony. Thanks to the generosity of the QCC Student Activities Association, Inc. Board of Directors, all Class of 2021 graduates were eligible to receive a complimentary cap & tassel to commemorate the occasion. We are happy to report that over 700 students have indicated their interest in receiving one. Student Honors & Achievement
QCC students Mr. Brian Escobar and Ms. Omaima Wasim have been named to the 2021 Phi Theta Kappa All-New York Academic Team (1st Team). This is a highly prestigious recognition by the New York Community College Trustees (NYCCT), the New York Community College Association of Presidents (NYCCAP), the Faculty Council of Community Colleges (FCCC) and the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society, is meant to recognize two (2) members of the honor society for their academic achievements, leadership accomplishments, and engagement in community service. In addition, both Mr. Escobar and Ms. Wasim are eligible candidates for graduation at the conclusion of the spring 2021 semester. Please join me in congratulating these exemplary students on this very impressive honor as they embark on the next phase of their academic/career endeavors.
Student Resources
- Currently enrolled students who missed the 2021-2022 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) priority filing date of Friday, April 23rd are encouraged to complete their FAFSA application immediately. Additional information can be found online on the QCC Financial Aid website.
- Faculty and staff are asked to encourage our students to avail themselves of the valuable and free resources through the QCC Advocacy Resource Center (formerly Single Stop). Services provided include (but not limited to) public benefits screening, financial coaching, legal assistance, tax preparation services, housing assistance, food pantry referrals, and more. - Emergency funding is available to students who face a financial crisis that puts at risk their continued enrollment toward their QCC degree. Supported through a grant from The Carroll and Milton Petrie Foundation, the funds provide one-time, emergency grants to students in good standing with short-term financial emergencies to enable them to remain in school, rather than being forced to leave or drop out. Please refer students with short-term financial emergencies to Ms. Amawati Gonesh, Advocacy Resource Center Administrator (ARC - formerly known as Single Stop), via e-mail at AGonesh@qcc.cuny.edu. - The IRS has extended the tax filing date to Monday, May 17th. Representatives from the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance will help prepare and e-file income tax return virtually during a webinar Zoom session at no cost. Zoom sessions are scheduled for Wednesdays on April 28th, May 5th, and May 12th between 9:30 am – 12:30 pm or 1:30 pm – 3:00 pm. Pre-registration is required. - The Finch College Alumni Community College Transfer Scholarship application period is now open for all eligible female students. The scholarships, worth $5000, are awarded to second-year female community college students who will graduate from QCC at the conclusion of spring 2021 and transfer to a four-year university for fall 2021. The Queensborough Counseling Center, in partnership with the ASAP Program and QCC Academies, will be curating a series of events during the month of May as part of the “Healthy Living Fair”, which is open to all students, faculty, and staff.
- On Tuesday, May 4th at 11:45 am, you are invited to attend “QCC Stands Up”. Led by Ms. Jun Ishidoya-Wang of the Counseling Center, the event will feature a presentation by the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene with COVID-19 community conversations. - Empathy to Action will also take place on Tuesday, May 4th at 1:00 pm. Led by Ms. Amy Pepper of the Counseling Center, this event will provide an active demonstration of how to build body based awareness using the techniques of social presencing theater with Professor Heather Huggins. - Impact of Mental Health on LGBTQ Community will take place on Wednesday, May 5th at 12:00 pm. Also led by Ms. Amy Pepper of the Counseling Center, attendees at this event will learn how to use tapping and other strategies to deal with difficult thoughts. - A second event, Impact of Mental Health on LGBTQ Community, will also be taking place on Wednesday, May 5th at 12:00 pm. This event will feature a discussion on the impact of mental health on the LGBTQ community as well as a panel discussion by the QCC Ally LGBTQ student club. - Wrapping up the Healthy Living Fair series is Surviving and Thriving – From DREAMer to Politician on Thursday, May 6th at 1:00 pm. At this event, a conversation will take place with NYS Assemblywomen Ms. Catalina Cruz where she discusses her life lessons and how they helped her during the COVID-19 pandemic. May 7, 2021, 1-2pm, OAA Presents the inaugural lecture for the 5-part series, “Thriving in Academia,” titled “Establishing Work/Life Balance on the Tenure Track.” This lecture will be presented by Dr. Dwayne Mack, Vice President for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and Professor of History at Berea College in Kentucky. Dr. Mack is the author of Mentoring Faculty of Color and will be addressing the college and offering advice on navigating life on the tenure-track.

IRB Workshop: Basic CUNY Ideate Training. Friday, May 7, 2021 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM on Zoom. Faculty & Staff who have projects that will involve Human Subject Research are encouraged to attend. You may register by using this RSVP link. CUNY will be transitioning from using the IDEATE system for all CUNY Human Subjects Research protocols to a new system called IRB Manager, in summer 2021.
Center for Excellence in Teaching & Learning (CETL) and Office of Educational Technology:
The Center for Excellence in Teaching & Learning (CETL) will be hosting a workshop series to support The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) in Fall 2021. Faculty who are integrating a high impact practice (HIP), planning to conduct pedagogical research, or implementing an innovative pedagogical project will become familiar with the ways of engaging in SoTL. Participants will gain an understanding of topics such as: What is "SoTL"? What is reflective teaching? How can we design a SoTL project? What are SoTL methodologies? How can we publish our SoTL work? Thirty-six instructors are currently participating in the eLearning Institute – Spring 2021 Cohort. After the successful completion of the eLearning Institute, these participants will receive a Certificate of Completion issued by the Office of Academic Affairs. By the end of this month, more than 140 instructors will have completed the eLearning Institute since the College transitioned to fully online instruction.
Seventeen instructors are currently participating in the “Online Teaching Essential” course. This is a University-wide course managed by the School of Professional Studies (SPS – CUNY) and it is a critical component of the University’s ongoing efforts to support our faculty during this challenging time. Each participant who completes the course will:
- Gain first-hand experience in and appreciation of the needs of an online learner;
- Identify widely accepted best practices for online teaching, including principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL);
- Reflect on how to apply to one’s own course the instructional design principles, organizational and facilitation skills, and communication and assessment strategies introduced in the course;
- Become familiar with the basic operations and features of a Blackboard classroom from both student and instructor perspectives.

The 2021 Partners for Progress Gala will be a virtual, star studded Broadway extravaganza with special performances from the cast of Hamilton, Rent, Wicked, Phantom and more.
The 2021 Community Partner of the Year is Jasmin Moshirpur, M.D., chief medical officer for NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst/Queens and the dean for Elmhurst/Queens Programs at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. NYC Health + Hospitals, Elmhurst was the receiving hospital for coronavirus patients during the height of the pandemic and Dr. Moshirpur navigated the hospital through those difficult days.

Fight Campus Hunger Virtual Game Night – Monday, May 17, 2021, 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.:
The grassroots student fundraiser, in partnership with the SGA, MSA and BSA, is raising funds for the food pantry on campus. Students, alumni, faculty, staff and friends of the College are ALL welcome to participate and/or become fundraising champions by posting the following message on their social media: Help Us Fight Campus Hunger - Please Support the Queensborough Food Pantry.
The suggested minimum contribution for students is $5, and $10 for alumni and faculty/staff to participate/sponsor a student player. Click here to register/donate.

Food Pantry Distribution:
Queensborough Community College’s Food Pantry will have a food distribution on Monday, May 17th from 11:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.
Students can come to the College to pick up a pre-packed bag of nonperishables.

Art Gallery
Virtual Exhibitions:
This past month, the QCC Art Gallery created its first virtual gallery tour exhibit, P.O.T.U.S., an exhibition presented in-house in 2020 during the presidential election year. The installation was inspired by the generous donation to the gallery’s permanent collection by the Spanish sculptor, Josefina Brunes, who donated her ceramic busts of many of the former presidents of the United States. This virtual tour allows the viewer to "walk through" the exhibition and also focus on individual sculptures and exhibition signage detailing the president's term of office and party affiliation, accompanied by a characteristic quote. In addition, the viewer can link to other selected videos presented at the exhibit. The visual enjoyment of the ceramic busts is combined with educational text and a video describing the process in which the president is elected.

Gallery Internship:
This semester, the Gallery has two (2) interns from the QCC Department of Art and Design working on a virtual exhibition that addresses the history and significance of flags. The College also one (1) intern from Bayside High school working in the QCC Permanent Collection who is paid by the NYC Board of Education, Postsecondary Readiness Program.

Intergenerational Trauma, Memory, and Stories Carried Forward
Tuesday, May 4, 2021 at 7:00 p.m. EDT
How is trauma transmitted across generations and how do descendants of Holocaust survivors and other atrocities remember these events? Join us to hear Dr. Marianne Hirsch speak on intergenerational trauma and memory. Hirsch coined the term “post memory” to describe how descendants of Holocaust survivors experienced the trauma of their forebears. Using the lenses of visual culture and gender, Dr. Hirsch will reveal how intergenerational trauma plays a role in the stories and memories that are carried forward and remembered. Dr. Hirsch is the William Peterfield Trent Professor of English and Comparative Literature at Columbia University and Professor in the Institute for Research on Women, Gender, and Sexuality. This event is hosted by the Nancy and David Wolf Holocaust & Humanity Center in Cincinnati, OH and is presented in partnership with Harriet & Kenneth Kupferberg Holocaust Center.

Liberation75 is a not-for-profit event dedicated to commemorating the 75th anniversary of liberation from the Holocaust. We mark this important anniversary by remembering the victims,
honoring the survivors, showcasing the future of Holocaust education and remembrance, reflecting on antisemitism in the world, celebrating the role of the liberators and committing to protecting freedom, diversity, human rights and inclusion. With more than 200+ participating organizations, Liberation75 features the very best speakers, films, performances, exhibits, tours and more from around the world. Explore testimony and technology, meet the thought leaders, have discussions with your peers and spend time interacting with Holocaust survivors. The Harriet and Kenneth Kupferberg Holocaust Center is pleased to be one of Liberation75’s participating organizations.
KHC VIRTUAL EXHIBITION:
The Concentration Camps: Inside the Nazi System of Incarceration and Genocide: khc.qcc.cuny.edu/camps
This original exhibition surveys the scope and brutality of the Nazi system of incarceration and genocide, underscoring the horrific consequences of intolerance, racism, and authoritarianism. Approximately 44,000 concentration camps and ghettos existed across Nazi-occupied Europe and North Africa during World War II. These incarceration sites, which Adolf Hitler used as a mechanism to terrorize and eliminate non-Aryan groups (those seen as “subhuman,” “useless eaters,” and not part of the pure, white, Germanic race), ranged from small barns to compounds with populations of a medium-sized city. These extensive networks of ghettos, transit camps, women’s camps, forced labor camps, and extermination camps, to name a few, played a central role in the Holocaust—the annihilation of six million Jews—as well as the mass murder of millions more Poles, Roma and Sinti, homosexuals, people with disabilities, social outcasts, Jehovah’s Witnesses, as well as other political and religious opponents. In addition to the exhibit’s text, images, and artifacts, personal testimonies from local Holocaust survivors offer painful insights into these excruciating landscapes of degradation and dehumanization. This exhibit is curated by Dr. Cary Lane, KHC 2020-21 Curator-in-Residence and Associate Professor of English at QCC.
