This course provides opportunity for students to develop a better understanding of their behavior and adjustment to life situations. Attention is given to personal approaches to problem-solving and evaluating available outside resources. Participation may be required in at least one course-related field trip to be arranged by the instructor.

1 Students in HE-101, HE-102, HE-103, HE-104, HE-105, HE-106, HE-107, HE-108, HE-110, and HE-111 must pay a special supplies and services fee of $5.00.
2 Course qualifies as Pathways Common Core 2E–Scientific World.

  2. student will describe and discuss the theoretical models for behavior change.
  3. student will describe the reciprocal nteractions between the individual, social environment and behavior that influence health outcomes.
  4. student will describe various health concepts including, self-regulation, motivation and self-efficacy on health behavior.
  5. student will identify and describe various maladaptive behaviors and mental health disorders.
  6. student will discuss various prevention and treatment methods for maladaptive behaviors and mental health disorders.
  7. student will describe the procedures for diagnosis and treatment of specific maladaptive behaviors and mental health disorders
  8. student will evaluate the effectiveness of methods used to diagnose, treat, and prevent various maladaptive behaviors and mental health disorders.
  9. student will discuss the impact of specific maladaptive behaviors and mental health disorders on the individual and society.
  10. student will describe clinical methods of assessing health behavior
  11. student will describe cognitive behavior therapy as treatment for various behavioral health conditions
  12. student will describe the process of selfregulation to improve health behavior.
  13. student will identify and describe the incidence and prevalence of various mental health disorders.
  14. student will discuss the effectiveness of public health efforts to reduce rates of mental health disorders among various populations.
  15. student will describe various research methods used to conduct research on human health behavior.
  16. student will discuss ethical and unethical practices of conducting health behavior research.

The following is required in each section:

  1. Class exams
  2. Final Exam
  3. Completion of Assigned Readings
  4. Completion of a Reflective Writing Project in which students state their opinions about various controversial topics within the subject area
  5. Class Participation; "One Minute Papers" completed at the end of class in which students are asked to write down and submit one thing that they learned that day in class and one thing that may have confused them
