Course Description in college catalog:

This course aims to enhance students’ understanding of the Chinese short story genre through the study and analysis of selected stories from contemporary authors. Selections reflect different social and cultural aspects of Chinese society.

Course-specific student learning outcomes:

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. familiarize themselves with works written by some of the most significant contemporary Chinese writers such as Xu Huifen and Wu Di;
  2. do textual and critical analysis of works by the same or different authors;
  3. familiarize themselves with some of the changes in contemporary Chinese society presented in contemporary literature such as readings by Li Yunliang.

Students will be evaluated by:

  1. how clearly and effectively they communicate using appropriate conventions of language such as grammar and punctuation;
  2. how well they develop their writing assignments that present a focused response with coherent connections;
  3. their degree of understanding of the readings through summary and written/oral discussion of issues at hand.
