Queensborough Celebrates Native American Heritage Month 2024

Queensborough Community College is excited to celebrate Native American Heritage Month and those in our community who identify as Native Americans, Indigenous Americans, or Alaska Natives. President George H. W. Bush approved a joint resolution designating November 1990 “National American Indian Heritage Month.” Similar proclomations have been issued each year since 1994.* This month, we honor the contributions of Native American communities and the diverse traditions and perspectives that enrich our society.

Today, there are eight federally recognized Tribal nations in New York State, as well as several other tribal communities with ties to the land. We often share that Queensborough is located on 34-acres of what was once the former site of the Oakland Golf and Country Club. However, we also recognize that this land originally belonged to Native Americans, and we deeply appreciate the enduring connection, the beautiful nature that has been preserved here, and the reminder of the importance of stewardship to our environment. As we continue to create a more inclusive community, may we uplift Indigenous voices, fostering understanding and respect.
