1. What is Counseling?
Counseling is the process in which you may speak with a helping professional about issues or concerns that may be affecting you. A counselor will listen objectively and assist you in learning more about yourself and developing the skills needed to cope more effectively and more readily handle issues as they arise.

2. What can I talk about with a Counselor?
Students can talk about various things with a Counselor. Some of the most common topics that students seek out counseling for include: Transitioning from high school to college, dealing with stress, feelings of anxiety or depression, relationship issues, eating disorders, difficulties with motivation or concentration, academic performance, career exploration, and much more.

3. If I meet with a Counselor, will my professors or family members be informed?
In most cases, what is discussed during your counseling session is confidential and will not be shared with your professors and/or family members. The only time in which counseling is not confidential is in the event of a psychological emergency requiring hospitalization or in circumstances involving your safety or the safety of others. When these exceptions occur, you will be informed.

4. Does it cost anything to get counseling services?
No. There is no cost at all for our services.

5. How do I make an appointment to meet with a Counselor?
You may schedule an appointment by visiting or calling the Counseling Center. The Counseling Center is located in the Library Building, Rm. 422 and the phone number is (718) 631-6370.

6. What other services does the Counseling Center provide?
The Counseling Center also provides counseling and information pertaining to academic standards and career exploration. Several groups are also available to students through the Counseling Center. Counselors can also assist students with resources available on campus as well as referrals to services in the community.
