Student Spotlight

Aisha Frampton-Clerk headshotR.I.S.E. Spotlight: Shining a Light on Student Excellence

The R.I.S.E. Spotlight gives our community a chance to celebrate some of our amazing CTE students, as well as the exciting new resources provided by the Perkins V Grant at QCC. Our first featured student is Aisha Frampton-Clerk, a Spring 2024 graduate of QCC. Congratulations, Aisha!

Aisha Frampton-Clerk is a recent recipient of QCC's Internet and Information Technology (IIT) A.A.S. degree. After changing majors from Architectural Technology to IIT, Aisha enrolled in the Technology Apprenticeship Program. Partnered with the New York Jobs CEO Council, this program provides IIT majors an 8-credit apprenticeship with major companies (in Aisha’s case, American Express) to gain valuable experience and accelerate students’ career progression.

Aisha notes how professional opportunities, particularly those involving coding, can be hard to come by for individuals with limited experience. However, her apprenticeship at American Express provided a unique environment to gain hands-on experience, training, and meaningful connections. Aisha hopes to apply the knowledge she gained from her apprenticeship to a front-end position at American Express in the future. She will also be continuing her education part-time in a computer science program at Columbia University’s School of General Studies. On the transferring process, Aisha explained: “I think other QCC students might find helpful that a lot of my credits transferred… this is something I was so worried about when looking to transfer… but they took all of my math and I’m working on getting my computer science programming credits… I’m very happy about that.”

Aisha describes a variety of QCC and R.I.S.E. resources that played a role in her success. A recent recipient of the Nontraditional Employment & Training Program Vanguard Award, Aisha says she would not have known about the opportunity if not for her R.I.S.E. student success advocate, Perry Stella O’Toole. Further, O’Toole and CTE Career Success Specialist David Mannes provided Aisha with academic and career guidance, including sessions to refine her resume. Aisha also took advantage of several R.I.S.E. workshops and events to hear from CTE professionals. In addition, an event hosted by QCC’s Transfer Resource Center introduced Aisha to Columbia GS, leading her to apply.

In her free time, Aisha is involved with Girls Who Code and was an officer in QCC’s coding club. Both opportunities allowed her to connect with other students to share the academic and career resources they found helpful. Aisha also enjoys sewing and reading, which helps her maintain a healthy work-life balance. She encourages QCC students to get involved in extracurriculars to meet new people, learn about opportunities, and contribute to their personal growth and leadership skills: “You don’t need to be the president of three clubs and do research and internships and everything, but do something. It’s super good.”
